Research shows that pornography use is linked to the “devaluation of marriage and child rearing” and that children from homes where parents view porn suffer “decreased parental time and attention.” How can your thoughts and concerns be for your children when you are addicted to pornography? When your mind is so absorbed in pornography, you lose the ability to concentrate on your work. While most companies forbid pornography use on the job, porn’s continual use away from work will gradually take over your mind, leaving little room for things that matter — like earning a living. According to the Family Research Council, “when viewing pornography becomes an addiction, 40 percent of sex addicts lose their spouses, 58 percent suffer considerable financial losses, and about a third lose their jobs.”

When you view pornography, you contribute to its success and financially pave the way for its producers to go further and further into perversions that involve teen and child abuse. Kastleman, author of “The Drug of the New Millennium,” suggests that, like any other drug users, porn users seek out material that is more and more extreme to achieve their “highs.” He writes, “And when images were no longer enough, many turned to acting out what they had seen in pornography.”

Remember how we said porn addiction can arise out of past trauma? Let’s unpack that for a moment. As a kid, you may have sought your parents’ help to cope with difficult situations. But when you do experience trauma or stress as a child, it can make a bigger impact on your brain than you’d think. Such trauma can range from minor situations to more impactful adverse childhood experiences like neglect, abuse, sexual assault, divorce, bullying, and more.

These should include the positive habits you know are beneficial to you and that help weaken your urges.
5. Celebrate Successes and Don’t Dwell on Setbacks
Changing deeply entrenched behaviour patterns is extremely challenging – be sure to congratulate yourself every time you defuse a trigger by resorting to positive action. Use other successes – more extended periods of abstinence from porn, taking up an entirely new activity, reaching out when you need help – to boost your motivation and self-confidence. On the flip side, if you do find you have let the pull of porn drag you back into your addiction, don’t beat yourself up. Let go of the past and get straight back to the positive behaviours you’ve been working on.
